“Brandon.” I turn around to see Ellen Vardy striding toward me with a stern look on her face.

My stomach churns and I wonder what I’ve done wrong now—besides fucking one of my interns in a supply closet on our lunch break every day we’re on duty since that night at the bar. It’s been over two weeks since that night at the bar. It’s mad how reckless I am with Lexi.

“Ellen, how can I help?”

Her eyes narrow a little. “I’m concerned to see you chose Lexi Miller to take to the conference in Texas next week.”

I cross my arms over my chest. “Why would you be concerned about that?” My heart rate speeds up at the mention of Lexi.

“The meeting Lexi intended to have with me just over two weeks ago was to discuss switching to another attending’s care.” She shakes her head. “She told me that the two of you hadn’t really gotten on and now you’re taking her to Texas. What’s going on between the two of you, Brandon?”

“Nothing is going on.” My heart knocks against my rib cage. “Lexi is my best intern this year, and that’s why I’m taking her.”

Her brow furrows. “I think it would be wise for me to attend too.”

Fuck.

My stomach sinks at the prospect of Dr. Vardy tagging along. She would watch both of us like a damn hawk, and that’s not what I want. The conference is going to be our first break away together, even if it is a work trip. “Why do you want to attend?”

She taps her finger against the clipboard in her hand. “I don’t feel it’s right to send a young female intern alone to a conference with a man she didn’t get on with. It’s much more appropriate for me to go along too.” Her brow furrows. “Is there a reason you wouldn’t want me to come with you?”

There are about a million reasons I can think of, but none of them can be said out loud. Unless I want her to know the truth about me and Lexi and what we’ve been doing any spare moment we get. I grit my teeth together. “No, it just seems overkill to have all three of us there.”

She claps her hands together. “Then it’s settled, I’ll be coming along.”

Fucking perfect.

I nod in reply and she turns away, heading back down the corridor.

How the hell did my plans go to shit so quickly?

Dr. Vardy may insist on coming with us, but I will not let that stop my plans of claiming Lexi as much as physically possible while we’re away. We’ll have to sneak about, which is less than ideal, but it is what it is.

I turn and head toward the cardiology ward, knowing Lexi is there. We may have fucked two hours ago on our lunch break, but I’m already longing to see her. Not to mention, I should probably give her the heads up about Ellen being on our case.

I don’t want Ellen grilling her and all of this going to shit.
